Detective Sam Reeves is barely seated in a cab when he learns that during his two-week trip in Southeast Asia, hate crimes have rocked his city of Portland, including one very brutal lynching. As the crimes continue, thousands of fearful protestors march the streets, clashing with police and demanding more be done to put an end to the escalating violence!

Reassigned to the Intelligence Unit following his “bad shoot” several months ago, Sam is quickly consumed day and night, trying to deal with his city’s horrors. When he finally gets some leads, he realizes that there’s one big problem. While the bad guys pack bats, knives, and rifles, Sam has a crippling fear about carrying a loaded gun!

One thing is for sure Sam is about to confront violent haters—and his personal demons—in a showdown that will shake the very foundation of his city.

This is the third Dukkha in the series and it is obvious that Christensen has applied himself to the craft of writing and improved much over his two previous books (which were still very good). The pacing of the story was good and as a martial artist myself, I appreciated the way Christensen snuck in training methods and meditation techniques into his novel; and is able to pull this off without coming off as talking down to the reader.

This book, even though it was published in 2014 (so it was probably started in 2013) is particularly prophetic, as well, given the racial unrest going on right now in 2017. This added another layer of interest to the story, as it has only become more relevant to the times.

There are a few parts that I feel I need to criticize, though. I bought the Kindle version and there were a few issues with word spacing where they appeared "likethis". And a few punctuation issues as well. I also felt that Sam's (the main character) daily life is just a little too exciting. Namely when he tries to enjoy a nice day in the park and finds himself fighting off an attacking dog. This whole scene could have been removed and replaced without losing anything from the story.

I do also need to find fault with the character Nate. While he is interesting (unique backstory and internal conflict, too), I felt as if all his dialogue sounded too much like Sam.

Overall my criticisms are small and should not serve to dissuade anyone who is curious about buying this book. I very strongly recommend doing so to anyone who likes police stories, action novels, is a martial artist, or just wants a damn good read. And go back and pick up the first two installments ("Dukkha, The Suffering" & "Dukkha, Reverb"), too.

Dukkha Unloaded A Sam Reeves Martial Arts Thriller edition by Loren Christensen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Loren Christensen's books about Detective Sam Reeve are fast moving and engrossing. I was looking for a martial arts thriller, and his books satisfy that criteria, but they don't depend on the martial aspect to make them work. I'm already waiting for the next one in the series. Christensen is shaping up to be a really riveting writer, and I've read a mystery detective book a week for years. My favorite authors are Robert Parker and Lee Child, and he's on the way to joining that group.
This series is as good as it gets. The characters are richly drawn and become people you care about, and the sense of place is completely authentic. The previous volume was exotically placed in Vietnam, with a cast of unusual characters and Sam's father very much in charge. I would have loved to read another book following up those events.

Instead, Sam returns to Portland and the police force, and meets some new, interesting characters. Mai soon joins him, but his father Samuel appears only in cameos, via Skype. This volume is more of a police procedural/urban noir, and some of its drama stems from Sam's inability to carry his gun ... thus, "Unloaded".

The bad guys/gals are white supremacists, and I can't say that there is much that is original in the plot. The characters and action, on the other hand, are wonderfully fresh. I won't say more about them lest I spoil things for you, but one of the things I most like about Sam is that he is regularly caught by surprise, takes lots of punishment, and suffers from demons that are all too human. So when good things happen to him, or he dishes out some pain to the other side, I was all the more pleased for him. He is a talented good guy, not a superman.

I marvel at Mr. Christensen's authentic dialogues and atmosphere, and eagerly look forward to the next volume.
I am quite familiar with this author’s numerous non-fiction books and I have read and reviewed many of them in the past. This is the second fiction novel (Dukkha Unloaded A Sam Reeves Martial Arts Thriller by Loren Christensen) I have read in this series.

I loved this one as much as the first one (Dukkha Reverb) I read and reviewed. This excellent action novel begins with Sam Reeves coming back to the City of Portland after a two-week trip to Vietnam. He is still unsure about returning to the Police Department because of a shooting incident he was involved in before he left for Southeast Asia on a trip. He decides to come back to the department as a detective working in the intelligence division. He is still conflicted about even carrying a gun again but his love of police work and his passion for the martial arts keeps him on track.

Like his previous novels the author’s love of the martial arts makes this a fun read for anyone who likes law enforcement novels with a martial arts theme. One of the many things I like about the Sam Reeves character is that he is a realistic hero who has inner conflicts and personal demons he must deal with every day. In spite of his expertise in Karate and other martial arts he is still humble and only uses his martial arts skills when actually needed. In this action packed novel Detective Reeves must deal with the increase in hate crimes that are plaguing the city.

I never like to give away too much information when reviewing a novel but you can be sure this story will keep you turning the pages.

Rating 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems).
